How to Store Cigars in a Humidifier

If you are a serious cigar collector, or if you simply enjoy smoking cigars on special occasions, you most likely know the importance of storing your cigars properly. Storing cigars in a humidifier ensures that your cigars maintain optimum quality over long periods of time in any sort of climate. If stored properly, cigars last for years on end, waiting for the perfect occasion for a nice smoke.
First: Clean the apparatus
The first step in storing your cigars in a humidifier is to meticulously clean the inside of the humidifying apparatus. Do so with a clean cloth dampened in distilled and deionized water (the key word here is damp, do not get the cloth too wet). Once all the inside surfaces of the humidifier are clean and damp, place a sheet of plastic wrap on the bottom of the humidifier with the damp cloth on top of it. The plastic protects the wood of the humidifier, and the cloth keeps a constant level of moisture inside.
Second: Get it ready for use
Fill the humidifying tank with distilled water, and let the humidifier sit for at least 24 hours before you place your cigars in it. Once 24 hours has elapsed, place a box of cigars into the humidifier. Store your cigars in the humidifier at room temperature, and at a high humidity level- between 68 and 72 percent humidity. This preserves the life of your cigars, and even enhances their flavor over a certain period of time.
